Club Island – July 25th

We left Heywood Island this morning at 7:30 and had an uneventful day sailing along Manitoulin Island. We have officially left the North Channel and are now in Georgian Bay! The sailing today was ok – nothing dramatic – just light winds, so we “motor sailed” (sails out but motor still on). We arrived at Club Island at 1:30. The water is a beautiful turquoise colour and if I could photoshop out the pine trees and toss in a few palm trees, it would look like the Caribbean. The anchorage was deserted and we wondered why nobody was there with us, but speculated that it is a bit off the beaten path. Most people stay in the North Channel and stick to the well known places but after The Benjamins (with 42 boats, jet skis, dinghies, dogs, and kayaks racing around), we felt that we needed to look for some quieter places. We will definitely return here as it is so quiet and deserted.

We went snorkelling and noticed that you can see to the bottom in 20 feet of water because it was so clear. The bottom is sand and a few boulders here and there. We will explore more tomorrow. I have to say that having the wet suits was an excellent idea because we swam for a good half hour without getting cold.

We also went ashore and looked around at the interesting rocks. There are quite a few with holes in them – fossils maybe? We decided to take one for home and it is now sitting in the dinghy.

So, in all, I would recommend this anchorage. When I find wifi (probably in Tobermory), I will upload some pictures. In the meantime, we are going to stay an extra day here and poke around with the kayak and snorkels.

Next stop is Tobermory (Tuesday).

La Cloche Provincial Park – July 21st

Old Pink has an update…

After leaving The Benjamins (quite a relief – very crowded! There were 42 boats in the anchorage), we decided to find a new place, a bit more off the beaten path, that was within striking distance of Little Current. We motored through the rock and shoals and totally relied on the GPS chart plotter in order to  get to our destination. As we came into the anchorage, Dennis spotted two deer near the water – a doe and a fawn. The fawn was having a great time playing around in the weeds. When they spotted us, they left.

This anchorage was excellent. There were no other boats (except for the people we are traveling with). There was a nice long sandy bottom (no beach) from the shore that stretched out for a hundred feet or more. The La Cloche Mountains were on one side and a bunch of round rocky outcrops on the other. We were well protected.

I saw another bald eagle flying overhead. We had already seen on on Clapperton (maybe it was the same one) the other day. That was it for the wildlife though. There were only one or two blueberries to eat when we went ashore, so that pretty much ruled out seeing a bear.

The whole afternoon was windy but sunny. At 5:00 though, the weather suddenly changed and we got a half hour thunderstorm. The Johnson’s were on our boat and just before the rain started in earnest, they took off for their own boat. It was a good thing as their anchor had dragged quite a bit.

After the storm passed, we had supper and then finally watched “The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo”. It was ok even though it had the English subtitles.

The next morning, we motored out to Little Current. Dennis and I were obviously not paying close attention though because on the shore (about a kilometre from where we were anchored), there were several canoes and tents. The people were all in the water and nobody had a stitch of clothing on! Jim and Sharon noted this when we stopped in Little Current.

We are now in Little Current and will stay until tomorrow. The weather has turned quite bad and it looks like a rainy day. It’s a good day for grocery shopping.

Clapperton Island

Yesterday, July 19th, we anchored at Harbour Island which is located beside Clapperton Island. It has an abandoned resort on it and was interesting to explore. There are several buildings, all falling apart but the furniture is still there, quite destroyed but all basically there. There were even two pianos – one was still playable even though it is ruined.
The island is actually for sale – $499,000 and is being sold by Gerhardt Real Estate in Parry Sound.

This is a good place to go kayaking – I went around the island a few times while Dennis went fishing. He caught his first fish but let it go. There are pictures to prove it and I will upload them later on in the week when we get wifi again.

I lost my kayak paddle in the wind and you would think that it would have been easy to find but it was not. So, now I will have to find a new one.

I would highly recommend this anchorage – very large and peaceful. If you do go ashore to look at the resort, you should wear long pants, preferably jeans. I wore my stretchy pants and they became covered with burrs!

We are now in the Benjamins, anchored out in the middle. We’ve been snorkelling. Very interesting as there are so many boulders and rock shelves. In one area, it was two feet deep and then suddenly there was a thirty foot cliff going straight down.

It is a very warm day and the water temperature is 27 – that is the hottest it has been so far. Tomorrow we may go to Sturgeons Bay or maybe the Fox Islands. We will eventually have to go to Little Current to buy fresh produce but we’re good for a few days still.

July 18 – Gore Bay

Remember to check the Old Pink post – it was updated today. It took a bath!

For the first time on the trip, it is raining. That is actually a good thing because we stayed an extra day and toured around. We got a ride from an elderly gentleman – Bill – who took us to Kagawong. We checked out the Bridal Veil Falls. The falls does not have as much water as it used to but it was still fun to go in. The town of Kagawong has made a lot of improvements – there is a new staircase, which is very well built, to get down to the falls. There is also a walking path that will take you back to Kagawong if you choose.

We toured the village and then Bill took us out to the lookout via a road that was closed, but we went anyway – it was somewhat bumpy but we did manage to get through to the other side. Bill was a good guide though and knew a lot of history of Manitoulin Island. We were also treated to a drive-by of the former Gore Bay turkey processing plant which has been converted into a funeral home.

Dennis bought a very tiny folding bike and he drove around town for a while. It is kind of cool – it comes in a duffle bag. I tried it and if you are just interested in bombing around, it is great! Obviously my bike is much better for going any distance but it is really not that handy for driving around town. Surprisingly, I haven’t used the bike much since I discovered jogging. It is certainly not as fun to jog, but you get a better workout in a shorter period of time, so for me, an hour’s run is equivalent to a two hour bike ride. I haven’t mastered the art of getting a good swim workout yet, so that is next.

Dennis met up with a couple from Goderich, Ontario who live on their homemade trawler full time. They winter in Goderich and spend the summers in Gore Bay. I can’t imagine enjoying a real winter on a boat but they seem quite happy. I was hoping to wrangle an invitation onto the boat, but the captain is sleeping (it’s raining so he may as well…).

We are going to watch a movie tonight – The Girl With The Dragon Tatoo – I unfortunately downloaded the Swedish version with English subtitles, so it might not be that great!

Here are a few photos of Bridal Veil Falls and Gore Bay.

Meldrum Bay – Gore Bay – July 16, 17

We had a wild sail from Harbor Island to Meldrum Bay yesterday. The boat was really going fast in the strong wind (not that we would know the speed – sigh…) but we had lots of fun. The end was not great though when we were trying to bring the sails in – lots of lines whipping across the boat. I’d hate to be hit by one of them!

We were forced to go to the dock to speak with the Customs officer – on the phone. That seemed a bit bizarre as we could have just anchored out and rowed the dinghy to the dock. We would have avoided the black black tire mark on the side of the boat but the cabana boy polished that out very quickly once we were safely anchored.

We decided this morning to leave at 7:30 for Gore Bay. The wind was perfect – right behind us the whole way. Waves were six feet but we weren’t pounding into them, so it was fun – kind of like riding a small roller coaster. We sailed the entire way and were safely docked at 1:00.

We went to the laundromat (very necessary) and then did the shopping. I had three trips to the grocery store and filled up on lots of produce plus a case of club soda.

Tomorrow, it is supposed to rain so we are not sure what we are doing. We would like to get to Bridal Veil Falls in Kagawong and Dennis found someone who might drive us. Should be another adventure, I’m sure!

Mackinac Island to Harbor Island July 14 – 15

We left Petoskey VERY early on Wednesday morning because we had to go quite a distance (50 miles which is a lot on a sailboat). The day was uneventful and we arrived on Mackinac safely even though we had to dodge the ferries and the huge wakes that they left. I immediately went downtown and spotted an identical T shirt that I bought in Petoskey the day before for $5.00. It was $22.95 on Mackinac! The Mackinac markup, I guess, was working overtime!
I only shopped for a few minutes – there were many people all walking at a snail’s pace, eating waffle cones or fudge, and that smell combined with horse manure was overpowering. I decided to go bike riding instead and cycled around the island three times (I know – slacking in my old age). Dennis kept himself entertained by visiting with the people we are traveling with (they have a much bigger boat!).
We were happy to go to Mackinac Island but also happy to leave. The ferry traffic kept our boat bobbing up and down constantly, and the cannons going off made the island a very busy place! The showers though, I am happy to report, were clean, high flow, fairly hot water, but you had to push a button to get the water. In all though, they did the job.
This morning, we motored all the way to Harbor Island near Drummond Island. It was uneventful except for the attempted rescue of the white bucket. Dennis was cleaning the deck and somehow dropped the bucket overboard. We tried to get it, I made two passes around it, got very close but by the time we made our second pass, the bucket was submerged four feet. I assume that it sunk to the bottom of Lake Huron.
Our troubles with the wind meter continue to plague us – either that or the wind speed has been zero for the past week! I guess we’ll have to try to get our money back from Fogh Marine – that will make for an interesting discussion I’m sure!
We are anchored out tonight on Harbor Island and are really enjoying the peace and quiet. Marinas are fine for a night or two, but anchoring is much nicer. I went kayaking for a while and then we went snorkeling. There wasn’t much to see but the water is warm.
Tomorrow, we are headed off for Blind River. We have to replace the bucket!

Petoskey – My New Favourite Stop

I always thought that Mackinac Island was my favourite place to visit but I now think that Petoskey is much more interesting and certainly not as touristy. There are tourists of course, but they seem like normal people, not the usual “Disney World” type.

First of all, docking was very easy. Someone actually greeted us and caught the lines – that was already wonderful especially since the dock is very high and I wasn’t looking forward to jumping off and falling into the water!

Secondly, the dock people were very efficient and gave me a nice little package that included a map of the town (how novel!), the washroom codes, and the internet password. I usually have to beg someone for the code and am not sure why it is such a big secret!

Thirdly, Petoskey has the greatest bike path! I rode along Lake Michigan on a paved pathway for 20 km. I could have gone to Charlevoix but didn’t have the time or energy.

Finally, the shopping was excellent! I got everyone’s Christmas gifts in one swoop! The restaurant we went to was also good – the service was quick and the food excellent.

The only thing that was not so great was the shower. It was clean and the water was hot but it was low flow. However, that was a minor inconvenience, and I was still able to get nice and clean!

Tomorrow we are literally leaving at the crack of dawn! We are going to try to make it to Government Island which is about fifteen miles past Mackinac. I think it will be a long day!
